IRIS / PRACTICAL GUIDE
Prepare a 3D printing enquiry: files, dimensions and cost factors
Give a printing provider the information needed to assess your design, quote the work and discuss a realistic schedule.
Explain what the part needs to do
A decorative model, fit-check prototype and functional component require different decisions. State the purpose, intended environment and the features that matter. If a part must mate with another component, include its interface dimensions.
Send a useful brief
You can begin without a finished CAD file. A dimensioned sketch, reference image or requirement description can support the first discussion.
- Provide the current drawing or model and identify its revision.
- State the intended dimensions and units, even when the file appears correctly scaled.
- Include quantity, critical clearances and any inspection requirements.
- Describe colour, finish, assembly and operating conditions.
- Share your required date and delivery needs; confirm feasibility before relying on the schedule.
What affects the quote?
Geometry, dimensions, material, print time, supports, quantity, design work and finishing can all affect cost. Two models with similar external sizes can require very different amounts of work.
Ask what the quote includes: design preparation, printing, finishing, assembly and delivery. Avoid treating a generic price per gram as a complete project quote.
Check the model before manufacture
For STL, confirm the intended scale, closed geometry and wall thickness. Review disconnected pieces, thin features and areas requiring support. If precision matters, agree measurement methods and acceptance criteria.
IRIS enquiries are prepared for your email app or WhatsApp. Review the details, attach files there and send the message; preparing the form alone does not deliver it.
Worked examples are illustrative. Confirm file compatibility, material data and manufacturing requirements for your project.
