Calculate steel plate, pipe and bar weight with Bhaar
Use dimensions and material density to estimate theoretical weight, with worked plate and round-bar examples.
The basic relationship
Theoretical mass equals volume multiplied by density. Convert dimensions consistently before calculating. Bhaar accepts metric or imperial inputs and reports weight per piece and for the selected quantity.
Material density depends on the grade. A density of 7,850 kg/m³ is a commonly used mild-steel estimate; do not apply it automatically to stainless steel, aluminium or plastics.
Worked steel plate example
For an illustrative mild-steel plate measuring 1,000 mm × 500 mm × 10 mm, volume is 1 × 0.5 × 0.01 = 0.005 m³. At 7,850 kg/m³, the theoretical mass is 39.25 kg. Two identical plates total 78.5 kg.
Select the flat/plate/sheet profile in Bhaar, enter the dimensions, choose the grade and set quantity. Verify whether your stock dimensions include any machining allowance.
Round bar and pipe examples
For a 25 mm diameter solid bar that is 1 m long, volume is π × 0.025² ÷ 4 × 1. At 7,850 kg/m³, mass is approximately 3.853 kg.
For a pipe, use outer diameter and wall thickness. The inner diameter is outer diameter minus twice the wall thickness. Cross-sectional area is π ÷ 4 × (outer diameter² − inner diameter²). Multiply area by length and density using consistent units.
Use the estimate responsibly
Actual weight can differ because of dimensional tolerances, corner radii, coatings, moisture or material composition. Structural profile approximations should not be represented as certified standard-section tables.
Check the grade and dimensions against your supplier specification. The calculator estimates mass; it does not determine whether a component is structurally suitable for its application.
Worked examples are illustrative. Confirm file compatibility, material data and manufacturing requirements for your project.
